Francis Luther Whitney was a geologist and University of Texas geology professor. Born in 1878, he received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1928. He was a pioneer in the field of mathematical methods for solving problems involving geologic structures. An inventor who built his own darkroom and photographic equipment, Whitney organized and headed a machine shop at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas during World War I.
